Leblanc Symphonie IV clarinet, John Pierce jazz MPC or Lakey MPC, metal ligature with a lavoz med hard or Rico 3 1/2 reed. I have used Vandoren and Bay MPCs; they are good also. I have a Boosey and Hawkes clarinet that I plan on getting overhauled. I learned on one of those and became quite fond of it.

After much deliberation I've settled on 2 Selmer B-Ts (1934 17/6 and 1936 18/7), usually with Vandoren B40 or B45 mpcs but sometimes with the old "table B*" stock piece. Bonade lig & cap, Fibracell M or MH.
I used to spend quite a bit of time playing 20s and 30s Conns (metal and wood), but I'm coming to consider that messing around. Had too many small parts break off Conns, and too many hissy notes nothing could fix.
Recently picked up a rubber Conn from 1918 that I was kidding myself might be The One, but I'm treating this as a relapse.

Works well for my classical/pit doubling so far...but need to get a new mouthpiece for sure. Any suggestions?
conntenor asked a question about identifying Buffet models. If it is made in France and has no other markings other than the Buffet logo and name, it is a professional model clarinet. The R13 design began around s/n 50,000 - but that point is uncertain. All the other models that I am aware of have the model stamped on them.
Also, you might find later R13 barrels marked R13 - but not the body of the clarinet itself. Hope that helps.

My setup:
Reynolds student model Bb clarinet - it's very poorly set up and has terrible intonation (especially through the throat tones), but it plays, so it'll have to do until I can afford something better... anyone have any info on this clarinet? seems like a no-name brand to me

Andy - Hold onto the E13, from what I understand it's the exact same thing as the R13 - Buffet's website doesn't indicate exactly what the differences between them are. As for mouthpieces, if you want a closed tip the M15 is pretty nice, but I'm probably gonna trade mine for something super-open (i.e. .070" or greater) just for more tonal control.
Dweekie
05-17-2004, 05:41 PM
Hey vortex, .070 is a monster on clarinet. It's close to twice as open as your current setup and about as open as clarinet mouthpieces get. You sure you know what you're getting yourself into? I own a metallite m9 (.060) that I play just for fun. It's got a high baffle in it, which is uncharacteristic of clarinet mouthpieces. It makes my soprano sax setup sound tame and quiet!
Oh, and in keeping with the topic at hand...
Wooden Clarinet: Modern Bb Buffet R-13 tested by charles west
Chadash Barrel tested by gregory smith
Mouthpieces: Rico Royal B7, M7, used to use greg smith for classical but sold it off recently, I have an original Meyer Bros I'm going to get refaced
Plastic Clarinet: Vito student line that needs serious overhaul, has torn pads and battle scars from years of marching band in the past, I like it better than the professionally handpicked clarinet and barrel listed above but I'm using the wooden because this one's unplayable now, use same mouthpieces.
I wish I hadn't spent so much money on the pro-picked clarinet, barrel, and mouthpiece. I don't like any of them more than my worthless clarinet and 15 dollar mouthpiece.
Vortex
05-17-2004, 07:20 PM
Well, maybe not quite .070" but definately something very open (easier to transition from alto), the M15 is pretty goshdarn closed and I can't get very much volume, especially with my jacked-up clarinet (but I can play really really quiet! gimme a mic!). I used to love closed pieces, but the Soloist E changed my mind, now I'm into open ones - it turns out all the open pieces I'd tried in the past had some serious manufacturing defects.
Of course this is all b/c I still haven't found a good conditioned R-13 that meets my budget, still looking though.

michaelbaird
05-17-2004, 10:20 PM
I sucked for a long time until I made myself practice all scales in all keys. It gets easier somewhat. I just play it like I play saxophone and don't worry about it. As long as I play in tune with a good tone, that is my main concern. Everytime I listen to Eddie Daniels I get inspired to play better. It is all about how your put the air into the horn. Having your instrument set-up well makes a big difference. I made a lamp out of my Boosey and Hawkes clarinet. It is too cool.

Since last I posted, the Fibracells are outski, replaced by various bits of cane in the 2 1/2-3 range (typically Vandoren, Alexander or Olivieri). I also picked up a Bonacio Conn mpc and a swell metal Buescher clarinet that are making me question seriously my previous habits...

You bet. Triangle stamp & all. It's #237xxx, 3-piece (screw-off bell, unit body, non-removable tuning barrel), silver plate, wide flat rims on the finger holes. It's an amazingly fluid, powerful, in-tune player, although the action's a little stilted and clacky in places.
They had these in the catalog till at least 1933 and also offered an articulated G# model, an Eb, and a Bb Albert. The catalog pictures have engraved bells like soprano saxes, but my bell is just stamped, with the same stamp they used for their mouthpieces. I think it might be a replacement from a nickel-plated horn.

sounds way cool!-lucky you. people overlook how good a really good metal clarinet can be. i am lucky enough to have found a metal selmer paris Bb wich is quite a player. mine has articulated g# and comes apart in the middle. bell does not come off but tunning barrell does. i had it proffessionally rebult and dont regret spending the $ on it one bit.

I got another! (Hands out cigars to everyone)
Actually, two more!!! (Hands out two cigars to everyone!)
Leblanc Symphonie I Bb
At least I take this to be a Symphonie I, since it is marked "Symphonie Model" rather than with a number such as "Symphonie III"). I'd place its manufacture at around 1950, though my understanding is that there are no surviving Leblanc serial number lists due to a factory fire in the 1960s.
I am really digging this horn. I have always liked Leblanc clarinets (by "always" I mean "during the short time I've actually played clarinet") and this one has all of the color or liveliness to the sound that my Selmer Model 55 has, only with more compactness or centeredness. It projects well and has great intonation, very usable in a pit orchestra. I have a friend with a Symphonie IV and neither of us could detect any meaningful differences in the playability of these horns.
W. Meinl A
This A clarinet is an ex-Bootman horn, and I'm using it also in the pit orchestra, for those passages in horrible keys (yes I am a wimp). The keywork is very Selmer and I wonder if it's a stencil of some sort, since I thought Meinl made tubas. It even plays similarly to my Selmer Bb. I'd place its manufacture at around 1925 due to the wraparound register key.
Vandoren V12 #3 and Ridenour mpc on both. I'm expecting a French-made wood clarinet mpc from Bootman soon, that he says will cure all my clarinetic ills plus give me clean fresh breath. :)
The Noblet Bb and YCL-220 bass have both been sold, the former to a student who needed it and the latter because I do not seem to get along with bass clarinet, and don't play (or enjoy) it enough to learn to get over the difficulties. I have a WX5 EWI now that I can use to play the few bass clarinet parts I'll need to play (once a year or so).

The greenline, supposedly, has all of the benefits of the R-13, with the added benefit that it won't crack, which makes it an ideal double, because most of us care more about our saxes, and tend to neglect our clarinets. (mine, for example, hasn't been to a repair shop in nearly 10 years!)
For what it's worth, my current set-up is an old-school Noblet, a Vandoren 5RV Lyre, (I'm currently pondering a RM 10 or 15) Vandoren Optimum Lig. with Vandoren Blue-box 3.5s.

i was just looking through this thread and seeing that made me wonder, i'm from Aust and for some un-known reason Leblanc is looked down on here. maybe thats because i've only heard things from the side of having clarinet as my main instrument... it could just be personal taste or it could depend on which side you come at it from...i dunno but even my friend who's main instrument is sax has a buffet.?

I don't play a whole lot of clarinet. I did start on clarinet before jumping over to sax. I still have my original Bundy plastic clarinet, too.
I do change around a lot - here's my latest discovery:
I love my Morgan RM15 mp, but it does play flatter than any mp I've ever used. I was having a hard time tuning . . . then I remembered my Buffet Super Dynaction Bb clarinet tuned at 442-444. What a great match! Currently using a Luyben and a little wooden thingy (reed). Doesn't matter too much what - I think Rico Royals #3 tonight.

Man, it happened again. I switched back to my original B40. My Morgan was perfect for fixing the problems i had with my clarinet. A repair tech was able to fix my horrible stuffy D and C and thus made any mouthpiece work great with it. I just can't shake the beautiful dark, focused tone of the B40.

I just edited my post up there, I actually play a Vandoren M15 mouthpiece. The M13 is about the same thing but is supposedly designed for use with the Buffet R13. I think the only difference is in the facing.
My experience with mouthpieces is limited but I do really like the M15... it has incredible dynamic range and a very clear, focused sound. Great for pit work. If I had the choice, though, I might play something like a Morgan, one that's a little more open than my M15, for more strick jazz playing. You would be able to get even louder and brighter with a piece like that.

I have a 1978 Normandy 4 and a 1960ish Noblet 45.
mpcs:
Noblet v2 - nice orig mpc
Noblet x2 - a tad smoother than the v2
Woodwind Co. K9 Steel Ebonite - a nice smooth sounding mpc. Makes the Noblets sound edgy.
Selmer C85 105 - a tad darker than the K9 and really nice.
OBrien crystal - bright and super projection.
I actually like the keywork on my N4 slightly better, it's better for smaller hands. but the 45s keywork is smoother (stiffer sprung) The N45 LH keys are slightly shorter expecially the C# lever, and the RH keys are very slightly further away and shifted it seems. I have to stretch my hands a bit more on the N45. Of course, the N45 sounds a tad better too.

"legit" setup, mainly orchestra, but also solo recitals when I'm feeling masochistic: R13s in Bb & A, stock 66mm barrel on Bb but want a Moennig like I have on the A. The Moennig barrel for the A is a 64. mp I use on both is a Marcellus M13. Ligature is a Rovner - I think it's a "dark" but I don't put much stock in the supposed tonal difference among the models. Reeds are Mitchelle Lurie Premium #4s. This reed runs a bit lighter, so it's more like a 3.5 in some other "premium" brands, I think.
Big band setup - A Noblet clarinet with its original 66 mm barrel, Rovner ligature (again, "dark?" but who cares), reeds are a mixed bag of older "legit" reeds and/or those that played a bit light for legit, i.e. this setup gets leftover reeds from the other. The mouthpiece I love - it's a Pomerico crystal, and the markings on it say "Open" and "Brighter." GOOD AND LOUD, but not too hard to play and control for an occasional big band clarinetist.

I've only tried one clarinet reed, and it wasn't close to the strength that I needed, so it got set aside pretty quickly. No consistence there, I'm afraid

However, the Plasticovers work well for me. Especially considering I usually only pick up the clarinet for a 8 to 16 bar fill. So not having to fuss with the reed is a plus.
However, if I ever get really good on clarinet, I suspect I'll become a lot more fussy.

It's an open piece and you can definately make it cut through. But control it and it will give you a nice full tone. It was by chance that I ended up with it. I didn't even know they made clarinet pieces. (I've used a Lakey for alto sax in the passed) I was trying some Vandoren pieces at the time. But I liked it, and in the end, that all that matters to me.

Interesting, how did you accomplish this? Do you have any photos of the result?
When I was oiling the bore, a few drops fell onto the low E tone hole (is that the right word) and when I rubbed it off, the dye came off, leaving a nice deep, rich color. I can take photos as soon as I get my stupid camera fixed.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I took the keys off, ran once around the clarinet with 800 grit sandpaper, and then did it to the entire horn (after testing it below the RH thumbrest and liking the result)
Also, it took a HUGE amount of elbow grease to get rid of the dye, and the clarinet stank of petroleum for a week or so afterwards.

Not that anybody really cares but... it's a Leblanc Opus in rosewood with a Charles Bay medium-open mouthpiece and Mitchell Lurie #4's. And the obligatory Vandoren optimum lig that I use on all my horns.
The ML's are oddly soft compared to other brands and I found their 4's to be similar to a Vandoren 3 or the Gonzalez 2.5's I was using before they went all squeaky on me! So far, no squeaking with the ML's so I am back to them for the time being. Plus the tone is just to die for and they play in tune. Go Rico! :)
I originally used a Vandoren M15 mouthpiece when I used to play an Evette-Schaeffer horn, but it doesn't work so well on the Leblanc. I think the Bay is a much better match, while the Vandoren favors smaller bore clarinets like E&S and Buffets. The Vandoren also demands MUCH harder reeds: Vandoren V12 4's and the like. If Mitchell Lurie made a 6, that is what I would to use with this mouthpiece. Alas.
Ok, let's talk bass: it's a Pedler in rosewood circa 1920's with a Selmer C* mouthpiece that came with the horn from ebay, and some no-name 2 screw lig. I have an optimum for bass but this mouthpiece doesn't like it as much. Still messing around with reeds but I like Rico jazz select tenor sax reeds in 2H and 3S unfiled. I know, I'm a blasphemer!

I've got a couple of Bb clarinets:
my 1967 Boosey & Hawkes Edgware I picked up for $75 a loooooong time ago in fantastic condition; really nice piece of grenadilla. It came with the usual B&H 593 mouthpiece but buried inside the box under the felt was a Mitchell Lurie Premium crystal mouthpiece that is just delightful to play... I had kept the "Master" by Gregory Hollywood mouthpiece I had from my previous junk clarinet that I really happily traded away to score the B&H at a hock shop, so I alternate these two great mouthpieces and just smirk at the 593. :)
my 1947 Conn BIG Bore 444N that I got recently - the previous owner thought it had a crack in it but it's just a shallow line in the grain and was in desperate need of a good oiling! Got it really super cheap and it plays oh so nice as a jazz horn. I'm using a new Pomarico Diamond crystal mouthpiece with it (I just can't resist those crystal mouthpieces!) and sometimes play with the Conn Steelay it came with. This horn just roars! :D
I only use Rovner ligatures - they are gentle on the crystal and I like the tone I get with them and the way they hold my reeds. I'm mostly using Legere reeds these days...

and here to the "Selmer - later model" .. should have said "earlier" model.
http://www.clarinetperfection.com/clmpcSelmerParis.htm
my 3 main crystal mpcs are vastly different
1 is a bit longer than the others at the beak with the a less wide more parallel beak chamber
the 2nd is a normal OB crystal
the 3rd has a built-in designed tone booster in it which allows the standard facing to really give extradinary dynamics mroe associated with larger tips.

Yeah, and one old Conn being played. My 444N. That's it.
Oh, yeah, we had a dabble or two on the really early Conns (but it sounded like that was just a brief thing and with clarinets from well before the 424s or 444s were around) and we've got a metal Pan American for an almost Conn clarinet...
No one likes the big bore Conns?
Can't find one in good nick?
No one playing jazz clarinet anymore so don't want a big bore clarinet? <Sigh>
Sorry, just me feeling lonely stuck here on my own in the Conn Clarinet Fan Club & Cheer Squad - playing, signing autographs for myself to collect and having to wave my own pom-poms at the same time!

Sure, why not? They can count as big bore - they just can't quite count as Conns :( - just another couple of Selmers to the long list...

Currently playing on an E11 with a 5RV Lyre; it plays well but it's a bit - generic?
steveslkar - I had an old CT for a while and it was lovely, but had sound projection issues. Didn't matter what setup I used with it, it still got lost in ensemble playing.
I miss it; I'm hankering after another one.

last semester I subbed in a college band. had to play 3rd part, in front of the trombones. next to the french horns i was able to project above the rest of the clarinets ... way too much during a FFF section ... had to scale back big time. couldn't hear much in front of those trombones though so just guessed dynamics for balance most of the time. Used the CT, previous practice I used my LL and couldn't hear myself much
but mpc selection on the CT can really make it loud & project
