Any one ever heard of a NEWPORT brand bari sax. apparently its a la sax stencil. i was about to purchase a 901 (im a freshman in highs chool) and the price was too high, went for a vito vsp but my repairman steered me towards this newport, he said it would play better than a vito so my parents got it. havent been able to play one. if anyone has ever heard of/played one if you could give me an idea as to what it sounds/plays like thatd be great

I'm surprised your repairman didn't know that the vito vsp is the exact same horn as the yani 901. Usually those are a grand less than their identical yanigisawa counterparts. If you look carefully at the vito you'll notice the body is stamped 901, and the thumbhook says yanagisawa as well as the cloths guard. The horn even comes with the $200 yanagisawa mouthpiece. I would recommend against the la stencil and would highly recommend the vito. It's is definitely the best bari under $3000. I think some of the other guys here would concur.

You should find a new repairman, one you can trust.

i most definetly can trust him. its just we figured since the la stencil was like 1500 less than the vito vsp, and im only a freshman in highschool im going to have to get a selmer or a 991 for college anyway.

If the newport is 1500 less than to vito, than you are paying 1500 for the horn. In my experience, I have never found a new bari that would come anywhere close to decent in that price range. Most of them are china or taiwan clunkers that fall apart in a couple years. There are many decent tenors to be had in that price range, but a bari is just too big of a horn to mess around with the quirks associated with inexpensive instruments.

hey
got the thing for like half price, i knwo its not a great bari, but its gonna be getting used and a bused for the next few years, and its not necessarily a bad thing to have a junk horn around for parts or if you have an easy gig or something when your tone isnt imperitive, or outdoor gigs. which is what im going to be doing most of. i kinda regret not getting the vsp but its too late now and i i know itll be better than the olds bari that i would be getting stuck with if i used the schools.
