One of my students (high school) has setup a gig sometime in June or July, at a park gathering at night in his local town. He's got about 5 or 6 players in the band and they're playing two 40 minute sets. The other guys in the band are older players in their 40's and 50's.

The person who hired him is offering $500-$700 for the gig.

This seems like a fair price to me, especially for a high school player, but he's telling me he wants more, especially for the older, more experienced guys in the band.

Do you think he should up the price, or take what hes got and run with it?

I'm not sure what to tell him now, maybe some advice from other experienced players would help.

Approximately $100 a man for two sets is pretty good. I wouldn't turn it down. I've played wedding and bar gigs, 4 sets, for a lot less.

My God - where is this local town? I'd say that's great money for 2 sets!

If he believes that jazz pays better than that, then maybe he needs a bit more real-world education!
