Ok, it wasn't a gig. It was a song I wrote, in all 3:47 of its glory with the backing tracks I composed on CD Karaoke Sax style at a company event. We had a little talent show that had a pretty diverse pool of acts from within the company, not a contest just a show.
So ... sound check I can barely hear the music and the hotel staff is running circles around me taping down cables. But I'm easy. Just me and this cylindrical chunk of metal I'm gonna spit into. I had confidence. Then I get on the stage for the real thing and PHOOMPH .... that music just got WAY loud. This was actually a good thing. My sax sounds better at full force so here we go fff ... (despite the intended gradual build up from mp to ff)
This is a tune with a million chord changes and no repetition per say, but I managed to (phew) pull it off with only two bars of [whoops] improvisation and I covered my buttocks pretty well I think. Thought I every night I was practicing: why the heck did I pick the most challenging piece I have when I've got four chord ditties a-plenty?
About 500 people. Ok, back to my alto and my prog rock band hiding out in the garage.
It was fun though, a challenge and a success. I feel good about it.
