Assessing Progress

I started playing the alto four years ago at the tender age of 49. I have a teacher and seem to be doing ok. My question is, after playing for 4 years what level of playing / theroy ability should I have reached? :?

You should be, at the very least, playing in a community band and at best, gigging with local bands. It really depends on how many hours you put in and if you are really passionate about music and the instrument.

The question is more about level of ability than being in a band although that should be an objective There must be a bench mark against which you can judge theory / playing skills.
