You sure are lucky in 10th grade I played a bundy and that was a step up horn for me. Take care of that instrument as you are not apt to be able to get another years from now.

Many of the gold plate SML's I have seen are lacquered. The ones that are not lacquered the gold is usually worn off. It seems SML put a very thin gold plate on the sax. They are all silver under the gold as gold will not adhere to brass.
Don't worry about the model if its gold plated it had to be their top of the line horn for that period. Its certainly a professional instrument.
Where did you get it?

i do overhauls at my teachers place, he is a repair person and also sells some used horns, he found this one and he knew it was in my price range and he knew what he heard about them, so we overhauled it and it played better then i amagined.

They only had one model at that time. Somewhere between 11xxx and 19xxx they split into two models.

Mark

Tks for your help, I know that the price range of this sax is a bit wide, Jack in the other room gave me an idea too.

Tks

It must have been later than 11,xxx. My 12,xxx alto is the top model (has the 22 features including rolled tone holes) but does not have the Gold Medal designation (nor obviously the Standard desination).

Of course, my logic falls apart if SML had the same incoherent serial number controls as did Selmer - e.g., Mark VIs with later numbers than some VIIs and vice-versa, which we have all seen.

About the serial numbers: my 140xx alto does not have a model name. My 155xx tenor is a Gold Medal.
I know a 149xx tenor without a model name.

My 144XX SML-bari has no model name.

So, if the tenor sax is #8XXX - and with rolled tone holes - but no model name, then what is it? Is this the pro model?? Is it worth $1300? Hmmm?
Thanks,

Gideon.

Mark--

$0.00 but I'd consider a bit more. Actually, Super 20's vary quite a bit in value due to vintage differences, brass or silver bell, pearl
sides or not, orig laq or not, condition--you name it. Put up the description, serial, etc. and your email, and I'll contact you. Thanks!
