Sorry for the double posting, (also posed question in Neck thread). I have a #72xxx Selmer MKVI tenor that will eventually need a repad fairly soon. I am considering the Jim Schmidt pads. I would like others to list their favorite pads and resonators for a vintage MKVI. Thanks,Mark

If the horn is of collector quality you should try to maintain originality.
I've had Schmidt pads on my BA alto for a couple of years, and soon on my Buffet S1 alto. They are the easiest pads to live with that I've every seen. Waterproof. Stable. Hold adjustment, yet because they don't 'seat' like traditional pads they are not fussy about being in the exact same seat. Everyone that has tried my horn loves the feel, and a couple have changed to Schmidt pads on their horns.

MBushaw, Thanks for your views. This particular MKVI is in great shape but not what I would rate as of "collector quality"....I am a player and that is my intention it to put the best pads and resonators for playing on...I didn't buy it to stick it in a collection. Glad to hear of your liking the Schmidt pads...I've heard others that like 'em too so I a prowling around and narrowing my options down. Then again I may end up going with the standard issue Selmer with brown domed resos. Just wanna know others experiences out there with other pads and what they feel works best...

You really can't go wrong with either choice. It will sound great w/plastic resos, and it will sound great with the schmidts.

I have a mk vi tenor with "toptone" pads. I bought the horn from a guy in Germany who sets up all his horns with toptones, which is a company in the netherlands, I think. I believe they are similar in design to the schmidts. I can tell you that this tenor is a monster...just a monster. But....(there's always a but) it's not exactly the classic MK VI sound, in spite of the fact that it's a classic 62xxx horn. Check the websites for toptones and schmidts, and see if you can listen to some horns set up with them. To be honest...if I had to repad the horn, I'd probably stick with tradition and go with what M. Henri put in them that made 'em so nice. Decisions, decisions.

I had a Selmer CC alto that sounded nearly the same as the BA alto. After the BA repad, they still sounded the same. Aren't the TopTones mostly metal withjust a small seal? The Schmidt's let you use any reso that can be screwed in (I got the standard slightly domed metal).

http://www.toptone.nl/html/ourdisks.htm Toptones are not mostly metal, although the man made material resonates beautifully and seals very reliably. Check out the site.
