im interested in buying an alto series 3, maybe in black lacquer. If you will regard my post "selmers and selmers and selmers (oh my)" then there is some background information on my playing if youd like. I would like to know where teh best price for a new series 3 is though. Here in toronto a couple major dealers ranged from 4900-5000 (canadian). which is approximately high 2's, maybe 3k american. The problem is that selmers arent the most consistant horns, although excellent. Is there anywhere within 7 hours drive from toronto (in the u.s.) where i could go into a shop and buy a series 3 after trying many out for a better price? hopefully low-mid 2000's u.s., and how about a black lacquered one?

It doesn't matter if they are "inconsistent" when you find a good one. One is all you need. ;)

If the horns at your local dealer need adjustment, have you considered telling them so? Let them set up the horns properly and then give them a play.

Willing to try a Euro import? I did it earlier this year for a black lacquer Serie III alto and got fantastic results!

Currently the Saxofoonwinkel (http://www.saxshop.nl) is having a 10% off sale. You might want to send them an e-mail. You could probably get the Serie III in black lacquer for under $2900 (US); and they are known for their excellent service and set-up.

its not that the ones in my area or not set up properly. its that they are more expensive than in the u.s. and in europe, and i am concerned that if i buy oversease that although the price may be better, it may really hurt me in the long run becuase if its not properly set up, or if it is slightly damaged, then shipping it back would cause loads of problems. that is a great price for a black lacquer series 3. what is the difference in tone from the normal to black lacquered series 3?
