I'm looking at my 156xx silverplate VI Tenor, the silver neck inside is a very dark grayish color and the cork-end pipe edge looks to be a consistent silverish metal clear through, with no brass color showing inside either. There is a tiny faint hint of brass on the tenon on the leading edge, but nowhere else. The neck is original and not numbered.I always presumed if it was a Sterling neck it would be stamped so.Btw,my neck always gets rinsed, swabbed and dried so it's perfectly clean.

Sterling necks generally use a bare brass tenon. Plated necks also use a brass tenon, but the plating covers the brass, until it wears and you see some brass showing thru. Some plating will adhear to the inside of the neck, giving the greyish color you see (darkening as it tarnishes).

Thanks 'Shaw, shucks..I thought it had to probably be plated..a trial Masterpiece neck may be in store for this horn.. Btw,my bare brass neck on my Cball tenor is much brighter than the silver plated one that also comes with the horn..??

Hey Lenny,I'm not holdin' my breath, I keep thinkin maybe I'll run across one here in the SF Bay Area. Far as I know they have to be fitted to the horn and then there is a such a sound difference in each of the different necks that a real comparison could be tough.I've thought of sending my VI Tenor to Steve G. and let him pick the best sounding alt neck and fit it while he has the horn for deep freeze and overhaul..

I got to try one with "License to Blow" (his SOTW moniker) about a month ago along with a silver gloger and all of his necks. He managed to get one from someone other than Steve G. just to try. Of course it wasn't fitted precisely to the horns and I don't know if Steve's are different necks or if his set up makes a big difference. This one just came off a silver Unison horn.
Actually it didn't knock either of us out.
Good highs but a weaker bottom. We liked the Gloger better as well as my Ponzol. Way ahead though was a very good old brass Mark VI neck that LTB had managed to find in Japan years ago.
I'm still trying to find some B&S necks to try - they make a solid silver.

There is a website for Unison, which distributes Masterpiece necks. They list a slew of dealers who sell them, including several in the San Francisco East Bay area. It's hard to imagine some of these retailers providing custom neck services. They may simply record the horn model and neck tenon dimensions, and send them to Unison with an order. I'm sure the local emporiums don't carry a stock of silver necks for us to try out on Saturday mornings.

I suspect your right about ordering necks alone. The Magic Flute is listed as a dealer but I've never asked them about just getting necks to try.

Cash,
Hasn't happened yet, I've checked hundreds of mk vi tenors. No dice. Only played a couple of SBA's. My guess is that it wont be loud enough.

Boot try a Bare Cball tenor with a DG on it.. then you won't feel so bad when yer SBA isn't QUITE as loud.A good one (SBA) should fit in your stable very well..my VI sure ain't the loudest, my Chu is a bit bigger, and the 'ball is over the top volume-wise..But that Selmer sound and feel is all it's own. I had to restrain myself from a 3 grand TH&C on ebay, so a snob I ain't..As I've said many times I want one of each.

I am planning on doing so, still recovering from the Bass sax and Bari sax repairs.
