I have a new Selmer III alto which I am just playing in. Generally it is superb, but I have an intermittent fault on G#2; it will sometimes tend to drop to the lower octave or refuse to blow above the octave without undue coaxing from the lip. As I say, it is intermittent often there is no problem.
All the pads seem to be seating well, the action and tone response is fluid and even from top to bottom, loud to soft and altissimo. The octave mechanisms seem to be working fine. I suspect it may be water in there somewhere, but mopping it outdoes not seem to be a reliable solution.
This note is the highest pitch on which the lower of the two octave vents is open, and it does not happen on any other note. Has anyone seen this, and do you have any hints?

For this you sell the silver S1???
I thought I'd read something about the body octave vent being too small on some III's.
Is it really better than the S1? I'm a split Buffet / Selmer snob, and was planning on an S1 sometime soon. I'd really like to hear about your shift to the III.

This is a terrific horn, I have no idea why this one is so outstanding, but my teacher, who tests all the horns for one of the largest retailers, gave me the heads up on it and he was right! On the other hand, the S1 has a more 'ringing' tone and is lovely too. This III, which is in 'flat matte', rather like a Ref 54, has a more smoky kind of sound and I find I get amazing control and fluidity playing it. None of the other horns would have got me off the S1, and I tried the all silver and other Yanis, various Selmers, JKs, Guardalas.

Where did you find the dark matte?

www.saxophones.co.uk - it is a new finish, they have another on order as well as a tenor. Apparently the importer had advised it would take a while, and then it just appeared. There won't be many around yet, but if mine is anything to go by, they are going to create a stir among players. Being non-engraved, they are not expensive either.
