Does anyone know which Selmer Turrentine was playing just before he passed away. Was it a black lacquered Selmer Series II or III?

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure it was a II.

Or was it a black nickel plated Cannonball?
The Artist Profile section of the Cannonball website has Turrentine with that axe.
But that is not saying it was his last horn.
I am interested to know too.

I wonder why he switched from a Mark VI to a Super actin 80 series. You don't see many artist doing swithcing from a VI to a Series horn.

According to the on-line record of his probate (http://www.pgcba.com/trusts/history1.htm):

"Of interest in his estate is the value of Mr. Turrentine's three tenor saxophones - a Selmer Super Action 880 Tenor Saxophone with black lacquer, a Selmer Balance Action Tenor Saxophone with gold lacquer, and a Keilworth Tenor Sax with black lacquer, valued at $4,000.00 -- $4,500.00 ea."

I saw him play with Gene Harris with the Keilwerth. I think he was playing the black Selmer the last few years of his life. He sounded great on anything he put air through.

Based on one of his last CD's - Do you have any sugar, it was a Selmer Serie II Black Lacquer Tenor.

I saw the same pix, 3saxes, and was pretty surprised. But Billy Harper has also been playing a black lacquered Series II. Johnny Griffin, Illinois Jacquet and Von Freeman are others that have been playing Super 80 II's and III's.
