I just bought a Serie III. I use a Link 4* with 2 medium Rico Jazz select reeds and I generally like the sound but would like a little darker tone, any suggestions?? Thanks

Harder reed with a classical cut - Vandoren, for instance. The RJS reeds are a little brighter. If you're using RJS (filed), try the unfiled version for a small change in brightness.

For a darker sound you might wish to try mouthpieces which open your oral cavity a bit more. Links tend to have some extra sidebands in the overtone series which causes them to sound brighter and edgier. After trying harder reeds, but not getting so hard they get airy sounding, you could try a hard rubber piece like a Meyer or Morgan for opening up the oral cavity for producing a darker sound. I like dark sound and use a Barone Hollywood on my Serie III tenor. Happy playing.

I liked the Hollywood and Jazz models on the III as well. I've got a couple Morgan's that work well on the III - 3C (now .095") and 7L (opened to .110"). Hmmm, all four of those 'pieces have rollover baffles and concave sidewalls.

I'm using a Morgan 7L on my SeriesIII tenor. It gives a big fat sound that is darkish but not too dark.

Dean, is your 4* Link rubber or metal? If it's metal, try a 4* or 5 rubber Link.
