My Mark VII alto has an M stamped before the serial number ( M26XXXX) What does this mean?

I think it stands for mighty good. I have one in silver plate M258XXX and it has a killer sound. Seriously though if you look further down under Selmer saxs under MK VII alto setups on the second or so page Alan explains it.

Off the subject a bit, Alan I am still on my alto mouthpiece quest. I have a C* soloist coming, a new Barone 6M rubber piece to try. I like the Meyer 5M but it still does not quite have the sound I want, close but not quite there.I Might have to try a Caravan or something else. I play alto in a classical setting and I need to blend sometimes and lead other times so I need sort of dark but with projection and full sound. Any ideas? Thanks

Soloist D.....bout a 74 to 75 tip opening, dark, complex with just enough edge. Not always easy to find.....generally go for $150, maybe a little less. I have a Meyer New York Limited 5....very disappointing. When I get around to it will send to JVW. He said he could open it up to 77 along with a few other modifications and make me sound wonderful.....for $70. That's cheap for a chance on "wonderful". I use to use a Larry Teal for concert....dark, but not a lead piece unless you open up the tip. The soloist D is the best all around piece for my MK7 that I've found. Works well with Hemke and Rico 3's.

If M is for the town the MKVI body tubes were made in then what town (if any) does the N on the late MKVII's and later Selmer Paris saxes represent? Did they move the factory or open a new one....more updated?

I don't think that M is for Mantes-la-Jolie. I think that M is for Mark VI tube and N for Mark VII tube and the other moderns (SA 80, SA 80 II, serie III, etc ...). Anyway, Selmer is still producing in Mantes-la-jolie is saxophone production.

Thanks Alan I will keep you updated on the "quest" and I think JVW might be getting some business from me soon.

Re Meyer 5's, I had mine worked on by JVW last year, didn't recognize it as the same piece when it was returned...in a great way! It now is well broken in and I love the response on both my Selmers, VII and VI altos and my Conn alto Tranny 1936. It was worth the 70$ by much more. I spoke with Jon last week and he is extremely busy, but like the great guy he is, he stayed on the phone and chated about mpc ideas. His web site is very informative and has the work and prices. http://www.jonvanwie.com/

Thanks Phil for the comment. Now that I have a few other pieces to play I will sent JVW and see what he can do with my Meyer 5M.I also play a Conn New Wonder alto along with my MKVII that I could play the Meyer with also. Thanks
