Anyone been to the convention and played or seen the Reference alto prototype? If so how about some juicy details.....

Look at Sherry's post under Sax Makes 2, NAMM quirkie for a brief second-hand report...

My teacher said he got to play the prototype at IAJE. He said it was incredible, maybe the best alto he ever played. He thinks the tenor is just so-so, but he thought the alto was awesome. Normally he plays a Yamaha Custom.

What did they decide to do with the finish on the Alto? Was it the "antique" finish like on the tenor? (I hope not)

Would love to see the honey gold lacquer and lots of engraving, but will it play/sound like a good VI? Surely we'll get some more imput.

I love the antique finish! But some guys don't. They should offer both.

Talked with the Selmer rep at NAMM, he said the reference alto would come in two finishes. Same horn, two finishes (just to confuse everyone?). One finish was going to be darker/redder than the ref36, I think he said other finish was antiqued like the ref54.

Did the Selmer rep give a date to when to expect the Alto?

Miles gave an update on the Reference alto on the Selmer site. Same info on the two new finishes. Miles gives it a strong thumbs up as a jazz horn only. Now expected in 2003, though.

Also reported that long-range we can expect low Bb Reference bari's.
