Shall we include the marvelous Kielwerth made Couf Superba I and II in this discussion area? By all means, I say!

I bought my Couf/Keilwerth Superba soprano new in 1976.It is without doubt the finest soprano I've ever owned, played or heard. There are no negative issues at all with this horn.My backup sop is an SA80Serie II.It's an ok horn but will never surpass the Couf.Currently using a Bari HR 70,with Superial 2/ 1/2's on both, playing jazz.

I have a Superba 1 Tenor and Alto. I also have a Royalist that I gave to my niece. That Royalist was better than my Series III when I had one. Once you have experienced this horn you may never go back. Need to find a Soprano for my collection!

I have a black nickel and a regular lacquer Superba 1. I tried a modern Keilwerth and opted to stay with my Coufs. It appears the Couf's are starting to develop a larger following. Excellent horns.

I've played my Couf SuperbaI as my main tenor since I bought it new in 1981. Over the years I have tried quite a few other tenors but continue to stick with the Couf.

I play James Houlik's old Couf Superba One tenor. I love this sax! It caused me to sell my reference 36, that's how good it is. right now, it's in for an overhaul that includes satin silver ody with bright silver keys, neck and artwork, with gold in the bell. I should have her back in two weeks. I can't wait!!!

I am now thinking of picking up a Superba one alto to go with it. Getting the same plating done as well.

SteveC, if you don't mind, who's doing the overhaul on your Couf (and how are his/her prices)?

More generally, are Couf's uncommon enough that some even experienced techs are unfamiliar with them?

Thanks

My local shop is doing the overhaul. they preped the horn and sent it to Anderson silver plating. We just got the neck, keys and key guards back. I can't wait for the rest! As far as price goes, i'm not sure. I am providing some services to the shop and they are providing work on my horn. I'm guessing around $500 if i was paying up front.

I think most techs know what to do woth them. they are not that different from other brands.

SteveC - What type of pads/resos are you planning for the overhaul? My Couf is in need of an overhaul real soon (as in NOW).

The best tenor I ever played was a Couf Superba I that was once Herb's. Apparently the store I get my stuff repaired at was once owned by Herb Couf. Anyway, I knew the current owner and he knew I needed a tenor, so he offered the horn for $1600, which was a few hundred under what it was listed for. Unfortunately, I had NO $$$, and my mom couldn't afford the horn... :(

Long story short, it was the best tenor I think I've ever played...wish I had money back in the day! My MK VI is great, and plays just like I would want a tenor to play...but that couf had a much bigger and darker sound...

Even though it's been a while, I still remember that horn!

A question on Couf history: are the Royalist 1 & 2 horns Keilwerth-made, or if not how are they comparable to the Superba models in design and sound?

Now that you mention it...

Are the Royalist 1 & 2 student horns or something?? Any ideas of tone, value, etc?

How do they differ to each other and to other Couf?
