I just bought a "Conn Chu Berry," but now I'm starting to wonder. The serial number is:

T
M251XXX
L

which I read off Sax Gourmet as 1932. It does not have a micro-tuner, and the octive key is on the top of the neck. Is this a New Wonder, a Chu Berry, or just an old Conn?

It is a late Chu, or commonly referred to as a "Tranny". They are very, very desirable horns. I do not believe tenors had the microtuner. What is the finish of the horn like?

No conn tenors EVER had a micro-tuner, only altos & C melodies

The tuner on my CHU was built into the mouthpiece. The mouthpiece had a ring on the shank that you would turn to tune the horn.

Thanks for the responses.

The micro-tuner got me confused. Sax Gourmet says that some of the tenors had microtuners, and depending on how you read it, it looks like there was a date when the tenors all got it. But I probably read that wrong.

Its laquer, about 60-70%. There is absolutely no engraving on the horn, other than:

Made By
G.C. Conn Ltd.
Elkhart, Indiana

on the bell. Its not even in script.

What has amazed me is the heavy guage of the brass. No wonder that character calls himself Sinkdrain.

Very, very cool to play.

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate all of the information I've gotten from this Forum.
