I'm very happy in general with the sound I'm getting with the Hollywood I got from Steve in NO on my silver Chu.

The pitch issue I had with my HR Link is gone.

My only complaint is there is more resistance than I care for. I feel like I'm working too hard.

Anyone think a laquer 10M would blow more freely than the silver Chu with the Hollywood?

vonbraig, have you tried pushing in a little further, and making an emb/air adjustment? This might be related. These types of pieces will perform extremely differently, according to where they're sitting on the neck cork, and how you are pressuring them to make them play/play in tune.

vonbraig, just curious - what reeds have you found to work on that setup?

I'm playing LaVoz Med. and Rico 3's at the moment on the Holywood. I played on a couple 10Ms and will play a couple more on Monday. I thought one laq. 10M in particular was an improvement over the silver Chu. I have experimented with the placement on the neck and have noticed a differance. All in all between the Hollywood, Early Babbit and HR Link the Hollywood is my favorite so far with the Chu. and the 10M's for that matter.

Getting your mouthpiece refaced by a good MP tech will make it blow free-er.

As a general rule, the Chu's blow a little mor freely in the bottom end than the 10M. It depends upon mpc a sto how well they will play in a given area. I have the best success with, JVW refaced Quantum, a Justsaxes Link copy and Dukoff's.

What type of tone are you aiming for? Modern or Vintage? This will dictate you choice of mpc to a greater degree than the choice between a 10M and a Chu.

That's a good point B. I'm going for that bluenote Dexter sound with a little Zoot and Al on the side followed by a Worktime chaser.

I spent some time last night recording myself and it was pretty incitful. Even though I'm working a little harder I've never been happier with the sound. Just a matter of shedding and getting used to that little bit of pusch back on the Hollywood.

vonbraig: if you are going for a zoot/al sound (lester...) you might consider switching to an old brilhart. i use both a personaline tonalin (S8) and a tonalin (5) on my gold chu tenor and am really happy with the results. your chu tenor shouldn't be playing stuffily anywhere...ideally it is the most free-blowing tenor of them all. the hollywood dukoff might have been a better match for the 10M, as in the case of dexter... in any case, your chu should be easy to blow (vs. control!).

I solved my problem by switching to a 10M. I traded my Chu last night. Can't wait to play this weekend.

Man the more I play this 10M the better I like it. I have zero complaints about the keywork and I feel like I'm getting close to a real jazz tone.

The fact that I can go from a subtone to a roar so easily is a new experience for me on sax. I recommend a disinformation policy bent on driving down the prices.

glad you're happy. though i wouldn't assume that, sealing properly or with the right mp, your chu couldn't have outblown the 10M. i did the opposite. played a good vintage 10M for 7 years and then visited bob ackerman and played several other 10M's and a variety of silver and golds chu's. it was like playing an entirely different horn with the chu blowing free in all registers and with more presence than the 10M.
