looking at a 1938 6M with an overslung octave key.
Is this a)unusual? b)unheard of? c)impossible?
d)common enough? rolled tone holes, lady in the pentagon, orig lac.

nevermind. just checked the conn 6M ad on the Saxgourmet site and it's clearly stated that the overslung octave key was an option though not reccommended. wondering if this is now considered a plus or a drawback?

What is an overslung octave key? I've never heard of one.

Never seen one that late. Last I was aware of was 1936, although they probably did offer it later.
You've got to hand it to Conn -- offering options in the catalog they *didn't even recommend*. Is that service-oriented merchandising or what?

I wonder if there was anybody who actually preferred a 6M with an overlung octave key. "If that thing isn't on top, I'll be darned if I'm gonna play it!"

There may have been some pro sentiment against the microtuner neck. Perhaps it was seen as an admission that you couldn't play in tune. In any case, several prominent big band altoists used overslung Conns during the swing era. This may be the origin of the nickname for this hardware, "New York neck."
