It's a sad day. Just visitied a guy who is selling his granddad's old 6M - one from the 50's, underslung, no microtuner. Price was reasonable.
Unfortunately he had it relaq'd, and they buffed the hell out of it. Only 3 1/2 digits out of the 6 digit serial number are visible, and the lady's face is not what it was.
I played it, it was not bad at all. But it's not for me, I'd feel sad every time I look at it. I'll wait for one that I know has my name on it.
I might pass on the info to a local teacher as a good quality learner / intermediate horn (which I think it is, with a small ammount of work).
Any ideas as to the right value for a horn like this? (Sob ...)

I suppose you're looking for a horn that not only plays well, but looks great in a more virginic condition, which I can understand.
But for the benefit of some readers who may have read that relaquering is, in and of itself, negative, I would add that my 6M was relaquered and it also now has a bit of the original engraving missing but it is a very good horn. I have had a number of favorable comments on the sound.
To answer your question, I paid $800,- U.S about nine years ago.

Thanks Gary. I might think a little more about it. What period is yours from?

I have a very similar 6M. Relaquered with loss of the engraving. Serial number is 268XXX range. Relacquer is a nice dark gold, some solder work here and there. The best thing is the tone is great and it plays so well. It's hard to decide what to do with this horn now that I have a great playing Buescher Aritocrat. It may very well end up on e-bay in the next week or so.

Thanks again guys. I think I might be able to get it at quite a good price. It will need some work, maybe a complete overhaul, but I did like the sound when I played it, so I might well go for it. I've wanted one since the one I tried in Deventer a month or so back, so maybe this is my chance. I'm not crazy about the appearance, but the sound ....
