I have seen a nice conn alto silver plate gold wash in bell it is stamped Made By
G.C. Conn Ltd.
Elkhart, Indiana with ornate engraving at the rear of the sax at the bottom of the bell there is a large pad which is closed by a cork wedge it can be pulled out easily but I wondered why it is there as it stops the pad opening or is this the idea please advise

It's the Eb trill key, a nice feature on old Conns but not often used. Corking the cup closed just prevented another leak in the bottom area of the horn.

It allows you to finger an Eb as: 123/4_5. It often sounds stuffy due I think to the small size of the pad. No great loss in having it corked. Benefit, as Jerry said, is one less leak source.

Mojo, I think you mean 123/4_6. Trying to get that bottom pearl with the middle finger would be like doing the splits. OW.
