Okay, with my sax out there selling-I am now still deciding which vintage I want to find. I believe that I want to stick with my original dream sax-the Buffet. I once had the oppertunity to try a Buffet for sale, and I fell in love with it-unforunately I didn't buy it and continued to look for a sax until it was gone! grr. However, I am still new to the land of good vintage horns. Which Buffet was it!??!?!
Or better yet, which one would suit me and should I be looking for?--I really trust the opinions here-it is so honest (well it seems like it!!) and welcoming!!!
I am a classical sax player and I like a dark, rich, warm tone. I also liked how the one I tried was so free-blowing-it just felt so good playing it ahhh! Any suggestions? I am so confused.

...AHHHH!!!
I am going to Toronto on Tuesday (I have been waiting for it). I am going to look high and low for a SDA -or any vintage that is a steal for its price (if i am lucky). I am doing my homework like mad-in my little notebook of what I am going to look for-serial numbers, values, models, etc.
Are there any...serial numbers that I should keep an eye out for in terms of the Buffet? I appreciate everyones help here-trying to make sense of it all haha.

Laura, they are around if you are lucky; I just sold my SDA tenor to buy an S1 tenor, both were through ebay, and the guy who sold me the s1 tenor had an s1 alto in unused condition, I think it went for about $1600. There is a retailer in the UK with an overhauled but relacquered SDA alto at £1000 ($1400 US equivalent - see www.mevtaylors.co.uk) I am afraid I haven't seen it, wrong end of the Island for me.... www.wichitaband.com quite often have Buffets for sale.

thanks for the tip Steve. I'm in Edinburgh a week thursday so I will look in on the Buffet at Mev Taylor's while I am there. Its a real pity he doesn't stock second hand mouthpieces!

Are you looking to buy an SDA alto?
I have one in original lacquer that you may be interested in. I also have many mouthpieces. What are you looking for.
Maybe we could link up when you are in Edinburgh.
Could you post your E Mail address
Thanks

sorry for length of time replying Brian. I've been ill. I can be contacted on ken.clark@langstane-ha.co.uk but its tenor mpieces I am looking for Berg for preference. As to the alto it would have to be very cheap to attract me, what with the state of my bank balance! I only looked in on the alto in Mev Taylors for interest today while in Edinburgh. Its a late 60s 5955 I think, relaquered with nickel keys, new pads etc, The only blemish I could see was a very small dent in the front of the bow. I didnt have an alto mpiece with me and was en route to Haymarket to catch a train so couldnt take up the offer of one from Mev. He says it blows a storm. He wants £1250 but I imagine keen bargaining would reduce that to manageable proportions. In terms of looks it certainly puts my heavily rubbed and acratched tenor to shame. BTW he also has a typwriter alto for sale at same price.

Well he lists it at £1000 on the website and thats what they quoted me, I guess he was giving himself some room for generous negotiation...
