Howdee Guys!! Sherry asked about the Buffet S2 on an earlier threat & I (along with others) tried to give her info about the horn, The problem is that I tried the big search on the web for any info about it myself & came up with a total blank. I was wondering if anyone who actually had any first hand experience with it had any thoughts about it. I own one & think it's about average as far as pro horns go, lacking the "Selmer" resonance, but of good workmanship. Any others want to give their thoughts?
Marcel.

Sorry mutha potamus, I never tried a S2, but I can speak about a S1 (silverplated alto) that I tried somme years ago and it was really great.
Mecanicaly excepcional (better than Selmer ? Maybe).I appreciate in particular the right hand keys of C-Eb. Iwas told that S2 was just the successor of S1, so I suppose that you own a great great sax. Lucky man.

Thanks Marcel! I like it, but finding any history on it's as hard to find as a non-partisan election official in Florida.

You have a great sax and a great sense of humor ... that's fine.

I'm showing my age, but I THINK I remember that the S-2 was marketed at the same time as the S-1, but was intended for the "jazz" market. I had a student in the early 80's who had one (don't know that I've seen another one since) and I recall it being brighter than other Buffet horns. Same great quality, just a different sound.

I have a broschyr of Buffet Crampon from early 80ies. They have there four sax models: Prestige(copper), S1, S2 and Evette. The only difference between S1 and S2 is, that S2 has not been engraved. I remember also, that S2 was a little bit cheaper than S1, Prestige was most expensive and Evette a student model.

And what about the S3 model. Is it better than SDA or S1 and what is the normal price for a used one ?

S3 model is the substitute of the S1.
I never saw it but I know it exists. If it's as good as S1 (I tried a S1 two years ago), it would be a great horn.

They only make S3 in alto. By the way, my S2 is engraved in a floral motif on the bell. I've been told by my repair tech that my S2 is an intermediate level horn & that I should "step up" to a pro level horn. I wonder why he's trying to sell me an Antigua then.
Paul T: How hard would it be to get a copy of that brochure off you?

Mutha,
Buffet Crampon pro model saxes, Prestige,S1 and S2
have some special features from which you can identify them. The special adjustable RH D,C- key
table and a hole on the neckpipe for the high Fis key. If you can find them, your horn must be BC pro horn. Buffet made these saxes from 1952 # 2925 to 1985 # 35733. After that BC continued only manufacturing of Prestige model and I think that the other production has been sold to some other company. Maybe your horn is this later production. Check the manufacturing number. I have S1 #312xxE from 1981 and E has also been engraved on the neck.

Mine is 368xx, which I believe puts it at '86. There are no markings on the neck whatsoever. Did they downgrade the S2 after '85 to Intermediate or something? It's got great tone with a Selmer C*, but put anything like a Quantum Spoiler on it & it all goes to the In-laws house in a handbasket. Anyway, it's got some structural work to the posts that need to be done, plus some other stuff. I just got it back from the tech right before New Year's, so now I'm wondering if I should go ahead & get it sone or just find another horn.

I discussed with some guys in the gig yesterday and somebody told me, that BC closed the sax production(except Prestige) in Paris 1985 and Boosey et Hawkins continued it after that. If the construction is still same he didnt know. But anyway you mentioned an Antiqua sax as the alternative. It sounds like an Asian name. I recommend Selmer Paris or USA AS-100 instead.
But if you are satisfied with you horn it is "pro" then.

I really like the tone it's got. After the info on what I've been given here, I'm almost 100% it's of B&H construction. I won't be 100% until I see that brouchure that Paul T (Many thanks!!) is sending me.
Like I stated above, I'm trying to get the finer points as to it's alloys, etc... It's got some work that needs to be done that I don't have the tools or the skills to fix & it's going to cost me some coinage. The info I get on it's lineage & whatnot is going to help me make up my mind on saving up to get it fixed or just go out & get another horn. Here's a question...How do you tell if it's ribbed construction or not? Alloys?

Mutha, you can tell if it's ribbed construction if a number of the posts are soldered to a long thin piece of brass that is in turn soldered to the body of the sax. This makes the connection stronger and less likely to dent easily should the post take a bump. You basicly are doubling the thickness of the body of the sax where the posts are attached.

Ahh...I get it...mine's not ribbed for my pleasure...I wonder if the older ones before B&H were of ribbed contruction?

Some 20 years ago I bought an Buffet Crampon,
Super Dynaction,alto silver coated.
I still play it today.
To me is the best that I have ever tried.
My problem is finding the original pads for it!
I live in Costa Rica and donīt get a chance to
go to France that often!
Does any of you know if I can get them in U.S.A?
My email is jazzjazz@mail.icr.co.cr
Sorry for my english guys!
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Buffet is the s#$t!

What are the technical differences between a tenor Buffet S-1 and a Superdynaction? Are there any major tonal differences? I like ny S-1 alto so much that I am looking for a tenor of the same model.
