does anyone have experience with buffet crampon s3 alto saxophone. i read that they are available in copper. How does their sound compare to other brands? would this instrument be suited for jazz. since apprantly, superdyncations are very well praised.
thanks

These are great, but they are tuned to A 443 Hz, I think. Mostly meant for european classical music market?? If that's your gig, then they are nice horns. They high tuning might be good enough for jazz (chuckle). Seriously, if you need A 440 (low pitch) tuning, and like the vintage Buffet sound, the SDA or especially S1 may be better (the S1 keywork, ergonomics and intonation are fantastic).

could you explain a little more about the tuning and how this affects to sound. it also appears to me that vintage buffet saxo's in ok condition are difficult to find.

2 S1 altos for sale at www.donmack.com; there was an S3 for sale recently on eBay and I mailed the seller who told me he used it for jazz. I bought an S1 so didn't get to find out for myself. There was a recent thread about 443 Hz and whether you could tell the difference. Personally, I'd be happy to be within less than +/- 1 cent on every note, what with the effects of heat and thaevagaries of motuhpiece placement etc., I am sure the horn would play in tune at A=440. Howvere the S3 is not widely marketed and would be extremely hard to find; S1s and SuperDynactions do come up pretty regularly and are superb horns.

SteveW, I inquired at www.donmack.com about the 2 S1 altos that you mentioned and I got a reply that they are sold.

I just looked at the pix e-mailed to me by the seller of the S-1 currently on e-bay. Absolutely immaculate. I'd bid on it (reserve is over $2K) but I need to sell, not buy, horns right now. Wife would kill me. Now, if anyone would like an early 70's SuperDynaction alto with 95% lacquer (sparkle treatment on keys and rods), that has incredible intonation and a great Buffet sound, just let me know. Nice horn, but if I sell it ($1100 or make me an offer) I get to keep my VI.

Sorry Jerry, obviously they don't keep their stock list up to date.

Kelly, is the SDA original lacquer on the sax, keys and rods? I'm not familiar with the sparkle treatment you mentioned. Could you email pictures to lightnsail@aol.com, I may be interested.

Soem fo the SDAs have lacquer which sparkles, my tenor does, but I have seen pics of ones which have it to a more marked degree.

Steve, any preference as to year of manufacture for the SDAs? How about nickel versus lacquered keys?

I've only played my own SDA and it is a 1969 with lacquer keys. The very last few had some of the S1 keywork which I suppose must be what to look out for.

Well I never knew of S1 in copper - that sounds interesting! Mine's great in Silver, though!
