I have just heard about a buffet flute that may be for sale around here. I like their clarinets but haven't actually heard anything about their flutes at all. Apparently it is one step up from a student flute. Any ideas on this?

Difficult to be sure, Boosey and Hawkes uses the Buffet name these days (usually 'Buffet Evette') on low-end student models produced in the Far East. If it is more than 15 years old then it could be a good French-made instrument. If it is a 'step up' flute, you will be looking for a solid silver head and definitely silver as opposed to nickel plate.
I was advised by a friendly dealer NOT to buy a recent model Buffet flute they had on sale for my daughter as he could not recommend it. As for the one for sale locally, you'll need to have a look, but with such fantastic current quality and value from Yamaha and others for not much more money, you are probably better off with a new or recent one of those.

I have not heard good things about Buffet flutes. It seems to me that some of the not good things I heard came from Gordon of NZ, so we will see if he shows up. :)

My daughter has a Buffet Flute. It is easy to play and plays with decent intonation. However, the tone is a bit thin. This is an okay starting flute.
Her Artley (1975) has a much richer tone, but is harder to control intonation wise.
However, her Gemiendhardt 2SPCH Student model flute has the BEST sound and intonation. It can be had from WW&BW with both Curved and Straight heads for about $500 (retail is $830). I would recommend this over the others.

BTW, these are all student model flutes.

The student models that come here... I find very disppointing - in every way - compared with student Yamahas. Oh, the plating may be more robust.
And Gemeinhardt 2ESP is also a big disappointment.
