JJ, I play a 901, it is a great horn, good intonation and very nice keywork. It is still a toss up weather the 991 is worth the $1000 extra. If I was a pro musician playing bari as main instrument then it would be easy, get the 991! But I play in a community band so the 901 is great for me.

One vowel less than the previous contributor...
I too play a B901, it is easy to play quiet or loud, has good intonation, sounds great. I don't play it a lot, but in the year or so I've had it, it has required no adjustment at all.
I think as a pro, you would want something more road-worthy; the rods on a bari are very long and the 901 series is less solid than the 991. I would also see the 901 getting trashed easily by a high school band.
But if you look after it, it will do all you ask of it and it is easy to pick up and play, even after a long lay-off. Boringly reliable like Japanese cars I suppose. Try Mathews music in Hollad, they do good deals on these - a shade over $3k incl tax, I'm not sure of the maths but take off about 20% if you are outside the EEC, and allow say $100 for postage. If you are in the market for one, call them up or email and haggle.

I also play a 901 and I am very happy with it. It's pretty clearly the best value for the money and an excellent horn. Were I primarily a bari player I'd think long and hard about getting either the 991 or a Selmer Series II Bari instead. I think the 991 has a bit tougher construction and I like the sound of the Selmer but not the ergonomics of the keywork. I've tested a 991 and 992 bari and I didn't find them much different in feel or sound from my 901. I would probably not get a 992. First, I think the 992 series horns tend to be a bit darker and on bari that's not a good thing as a bari needs a bit of brightness for the "cut". Second, I have a 992 tenor and I love it but he metal is really soft; I've gotten a dent in the bell and fixed it with my hand and you can't even see it. That's how soft it is. Baris tend to get dented pretty easily and I don't think the 992 is a good idea.
