I just got the opportunity to play Bari in the local community band. I've got an old Yamaha 5C mouthpiece that I haven't touched in years (I haven't played bari in 10 years), and a S80 C*.

I'm looking for recommendations on a good all-around piece that I can use primarily for this band, but also the occasional big band gig (I'd like to get back into playing bari). I'd prefer if the price was around $100, too.

Suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Metal RIAs are brass and plated with what looks to me like silver.

Like what RS says for the new ones.

I also have what looks like an older RIA that is some kind of aluminum alloy.

If it feels heavy in the hand, it is silver plated brass.

R.S.- I have been playing the HR 10# RIA for a number of weeks back and forth with my 10 Metal, and I am really starting to like the HR...I can whisper with it and go to a roar and have an amazingly fat sound with edge...Once I got over the odd feel of the HR, I have been using it more and more...Not necessarily better than the metal (the metal is a little brighter and has a little more cut to it) but, intrigueingly different.

T.S.--I use a wedge in my rubber 10*. Adds a little edge and power while still retaining some of the warmth of the hard rubber. The plain rubber piece (no added baffle) plays well but the wedge is the icing on the cake. An easy blowing piece with plenty of power that can blend and get a mellow sound too. I have also found that I can sub-tone easier on the RIAs (both metal and rubber) than on other pieces I have played. Down to low Bb if I don't use too hard a reed. Also, I've been considering the idea of getting another rubber 10* and sending it to Jon Van Wie for some tweaking and finishing. He really improved my Meyer alto piece which was a good piece to begin with. It would be interesting to see if he could do the same for a RIA bari piece.

Andres,

I have a Yani HR 5. It really is a great all-around piece. I used a couple of time for classical playing. If you are interested in it let me know.

for bari sax,, I'm using right now a Rico metalite and believe it or not,, it does give a great sound and bright...I have a vintage link and a Dukoff for bari and I really like this one...the link is good for a dark sound,,Workmanship on the Dukoff is very poor....
