I've bought a Buffet SDA bari that has the support post at the bottom of the bow. The Protec contour case has very little padding in the bottom bow area, and the support post rests on the hard surface below this padding. I am afraid that any blow to that area will be transmitted undampened up the horn to the pigtail!
I don't have access to a Protec oblong case, so I was hoping that someone who does could tell me how much padding is at the bottom of the bow area.

Looks like it's a little over an inch thick in mine. Seems like you'd almost need a cutout for that post, so the actual bow is seated on the padding instead of the post.

I have a Protec bari case (the non-contoured, "coffin" type) that I don't use anymore. Would you be interested in trading?

Thanks MPL
Saxfiend- Thanks for the offer, but the bow post extends about an inch from the bow, so again the post would be resting directly on the hard exterior.

Hmmm -- I guess that will be a problem no matter what case you use. Maybe a case that is loose fitting (normally not desirable) would give you some room to add padding under the bow on either side of the post; or like MPL says, make a cutout in a snug case (though my experience with Protecs is that you wouldn't have a whole lot of leeway for making such a cutout).

I've never seen a horn with this post before. Is it the sort of thing that cellos and basses have, so it can rest on the floor while you play? I'm not sure I'd find that very useful ...

Well, if you end up with a more satisfactory case and want to get rid of the Protec contoured case, I'd be very interested. I just recntly got a low A bari that I'm really enjoying except for the enormous and heavy case.

Good luck.

I don't have the Protec, I was able to size it with a friend (odd how in a small area I know 5 people who own a bari!)
Actually, I kind of like the post, the neckstrap now just keeps the horn from falling away, so very little weight on the neck.

if you want to see what the horn looks like (the pictures are very flattering, horn doesn't look quite that good! must have been taken right after polishing)

I don't know . . . on Ebay, the horn just looks like a little X in every shot . . .

Just kidding, the seller apparently removed the pictures already. Too bad, I'd like to have seen what that bow post idea looks like.

Oooo, that's a pretty horn! Hope it plays well too.

I still don't think I'd want that bottom post unless it was removeable.

OOps, forgot to mention that all except about an inch of the post is removeable. And it does play as good as it looks in the pictures, see the review under Buffet low A Bari thread.

Hey Saxfiend -

Would your unused Protec coffin case fit a Big B? I'm still using the original case, and I'm afraid the bottom is going to drop out of it sometime... it's in really rough shape.

max,

I currently use a Protec coffin to hold my Big B, so yes, it does work...

P.S. I have one for sale if you're interested...please email me at paducah_guy@hotmail.com

Max -- yes, I'm sure it would fit your horn. I was using it with my old Conn 12M, and it fit fine. Since MusicMan has been trying to sell his on SOTW for a while, I'll give him the first shot, but if it doesn't work out, I'll sell you mine.

MusicMan -- I thought you said you were going to list yours on Ebay, but never saw it there. I was watching for it cuz I wanted to see how much to sell mine for.

Saxfiend...I thought I had a deal worked out, but it fell through this weekend. The buyer never showed up when he promised and then phoned me to say he didn't have the cash...car problems.

If you can work a deal with max, I'd be happy to step aside...

Man - when it rains it pours! Who woulda thought there would be multiple used bari cases to choose from?

I've already sent MusicMan some e-mail, so I'll keep up with that unless he decides to not sell it to me for ethical reasons. If so, I'll contact you, Saxfiend!

Now that I look, I do see MusicMan's post in Marketplace (waay down there - might not survive another day)... I hadn't looked there yet, since I was looking for info here first.

I hope there are no hard feelings!

Like I said, I defer to you MusicMan since your ad came first (actually, your ad came "only" since I haven't advertised). I'm in no rush. I just want to get a contour case, so if I can eventually sell my "coffin" it'll offset that purchase.

And if I can't sell it, I know what I can use it for in about 30 years or so, more if I'm lucky! <g>
