I recently joined my community concert band playing bari (I normally play in a Jazz big band), and I noticed that the bari player that I'm playing with rests his baritone on a piece of wood between his legs. I play using a neck strap with the horn to the right of my right leg. Isn't this how it's supposed to be played, with the mouthpiece entering your mouth at an angle?

Larry Teal says the mouthpiece should be at a 45 degree angle. I play at closer to 60 degree. I think that as long as you can reach everything comfortably, you can put the horn anywhere you want. However, I have never seen a centered bari, so now I'll have to try it! Could it be that he has a neck problem and cannot wear a strap or harness?

No, I don't believe he has a back problem.

I play my Bari between my legs without a piece of wood. I play Tenor and Bari like Alto. When I'm standing I use the BG harnish, but when I play sitting on a chair I use a normal neckstrap, even on Bari. Till now, everything works fine, even my neck :)

i play bari with a reg strap and put it out the m right side like a flute, upside down when i sit. But seriously, normalness works for me. I just wonder how he get it to fit.
