I thought I had heard their were some bands out there in which a bari sax functions as a replacement, or in the role of a bass guitar player.
Does anyone have any knowledge of bands that have this type of line-up? (Guitar, Bari, Drums)

I know many funk bands that have bari double the bass lines but I don't think I've ever heard of a bari that replaced bass. Maybe someone else knows.

Could even an amplified bari can produce enough bottom to replace an electric bass? Even with an acoustic outfit, the tonal properties of a bari and a bass are so different that I can't imagine it would work well.
I've seen several bands that use a Fender Piano Bass or modern keyboard equivalent to relace the bass, but not a bari.

Morphine is a rock band where bari sax replaces the guitar. They are a trio consisting of two-string bass, drums and bari sax (occasionally other saxes as well). Cool band, worth checking out.

Try Tuba or Sousaphone instead.

My band, WesLesMorFine, has that set-up, since I got my '37 Martin Bari, UG - Leader of the Impending Martian Invasion Force. I was playing bass but we're practicing in the garage right now.
But by applying contrapuntonality to the bari arrangement, we're thinking a bass player might fit in as well, since I will be playing tenor and lead guitar as well. We used to have a Sousaphone player who doubled on trombone. Look for our upcoming CD on Givemachance records.

A lot of bands in the 50's, early do wop and rock and roll used the bari to double the bass, before the electric bass. I don't see it much anymore though. I think that if Rocco was late for a TOP gig, Doc G could cover it till he got there.
