Gerry Mulligan Quartet with Chet Baker? Been listening (too much!) to The Best of, and can't get the tunes out of the old dome. Bought a bari, been listening to bari CDs, but am stuck, happily, right here.
Bernie's Tune, Nights at the Turntable, Freeway, Soft Shoe, Walking Shoes, Swinghouse, Jeru, etc., etc.
If you're looking for the definition of Cali-style cool jazz, this is it.
My 2 cents for today. Thank you.

Me too! Just bought it yesterday and WOW, I'm blown away.
It took me a minute or so to notice the absence of piano on the ENTIRE CD. Ingenious compositions there, and wonderful solos by the two. I've never heard a bari sound so rich and vocal before, or a trumpet so full and vocal.
I'm currently playing mostly tenor and alto. Now I'm thinking about taking up bari in my own small band again.

Check out the Concert Jazz Band, plus the quartet with Art Farmer too. Also listen to some of the sextet stuff as well.

GNP / Crescendo has a CD of Mulligan's quartet and Tentet that is so West Coast Cool it is hot! Gene Norman (producer) relates some interesting stories in the liner notes.

to order. Some of the big band live recordings show the limitations of the day, but this studio CD is great.

Lol Marshall. Don't bust on Gerry! That's what the cool jazz was all about. So what if he never went below middle A! If he did he wouldn't have sounded "cool". With only one other solo voice in the band he needed a nice dark, rich and thick sound(moreso than alto)while still maintaining the alto range of the instrument.

To hear what Jeru sounded like in the '90s, check out "The Final Recordings" on Telarc label (sound bites at CDNOW.com).
And, listen to a superb Mulligan on "Paridise Cafe" recorded less than a year before he passed. But you'll get past any endemic dislike for Barry Manilow.
