Good quality horn, easy to play, in tune, reliable horn.

Will it sound like Mulligan? Maybe, but that depends on your choice of mouthpiece and more importantly how you play. However, for a vintage type sound, I would have thought you'd be better with an old Conn, Buescher or Martin bari, any one of which would cost you less than the B901.

I have a B901 myself, because I prefer modern keywork and the fact that the horn os so easy to play.

Well I like mine a lot, lots of bang for the buck, sounds good, plays easy and in tune. Just started using a Metal Q13 on it that has really opened up the sound and tonal pallet of the horn. Don't know if you can do Mulligan or not maybe a bit closer to Brignola. I mainly just want to sound like myself, whatever that might be.

Tom ed,
I have a 901 also, I have used an otto link rubber #7 and the stock yani #5. Still not happy with the sound, especially in the upper register. I presume you were refering to a Quantum metal mouthpiece? I was thinking of trying one. Tell me more about your experience with it please

Stevie W,
The Quantum metal 13 works well for me. I used the stock mouthpiece for a while, and was pleased with the sound but that was before the Quantum came into my life. The quantum gives the yani a much larger sound as well as a lot more volume. Part of this is because of the larger tip opening, I can put more air into the horn. When I really get to blowing I can feel air out of the upper toneholes blowing on my hand when playing the left hand notes, something I never noticed with the stock piece. But when throttled down and playing soft the tone is very mellow. There is better response to both the low range as well as the high notes, it just isn't as hard to hit them dead on. As for as the tonal quality it definiately has the sound of a modern bari. Presently I'm having good success with Alexander DCs 2 1/2.
Well now for my disclaimer, I really haven't played a lot of mouthpieces, or many other baris. I play the sax just well enough not to get kicked out of a community band, but the director probably wouldn't miss me if I didn't show up(if you know what I mean). That said, you might find that you really like the quantum.

If a guy is looking for a reasonably priced new bari that will hold up, play in tune, and not embarrass him in a big symphonic band, is the 901 a good choice?

Tom,
Thanks for the info. now you have a metal Quantum with a 13 opening, is that correct? Wow that thing is really wide open what is the opening according to the chart? Do you use a spoiler in it? I am definately considering this mouthpiece. Thanks again for your feedback.

Stevie,
The opening is a 120, scared me to death when I first saw it, but with a 2 1/2 reed it is really quite easy to play. With the Yani's strong tonal center its not hard to play in tune with that open of mouthpiece. I do like the spoiler. It is like kicking in the after burners on the horn. Low A is a bit harder to play with the spoiler in but not that difficult. I don't use it much with the concert band unless we play outside and I feel I need the extra volume, but I mess around a lot with it at the house. By the way the spoiler will also fit inside a Rico Royal Graftonite mouthpiece, which gives it a very smooth bright jazz sound(also produces a lot of volume).
