mark m,

Funny, I was looking at that same horn! But if it weren't for bootman, I couldn't imagine a bari sounding any larger than the Martin I got from Steve G.

Common bootman, just how much bigger is the chu than the Martin???? Please say, "not much..."

Congrats on the horn. I have to confess that I have just sold my Chu Baritone, or swapped it as a deal plus cash for a Conn Bass plus a Buescher Custom Baritone. The Buescher custom sounds huge liek the Chu, more focused but still retains a big huge sound. The Buescher is a 274K Bari with Norton Springs, Snap In pads etc, all the goodies of my tenor and alto.

I will have to track down another Chu Baritone in silver plate in the future. I just have to give the wallet a chance to recover.

MOS (in my business means "without sound") - I am still waiting for my Martin "The" from Steve. Hopefully seeing it in the next day or so. Glad to hear you are still enjoying yours - any updates?

Bootman - "WOW" would be the first couple of things I'd say... First to see you let go of the Chu bari, and secondly in consideration of what sounds like a great deal - congrats and condolences at once, I suppose!

Bootman, What is a "custom" baritone? Now you must post some clips of the Buescher and the BASS!!

A Custom Baritone is the Baritone model of the Buescher Aristocrat tenors and altos. It has Norton Springs, Snap-ins etc. It is definitely a sad thing to see this horn go but I feel as if I have done really well out of it too. Give me some time and I will be chasing yet another Chu Baritone in the future. The deal has worked out well for both parties concerned, I am now broke though but I have a Bass, you want bottom end, try a Conn Bass.

Say it ain't so...the mighty Chu is gone? I recall reading somewhere here that it would be buried with you...

But I agree, I think a bass is ridiculously cool. Ask jbjazzman@aol.com for pictures of his bass. I think it's right up your alley. It's a Conn stencil, silverplated with a custom engraving job. Very impressive.

It is so, I was made a deal I couldn't afford to say no too. Give me a couple of months and I will be Chu hunting.

Geez Bootman, you always said the Chu Baritone would be the last horn to go. It was pictures of your Chu that inspired me to restore my Conn Chu Tenor, and now the Baritone. However, for the trade that you made, I think you came out way ahead of the game. I think I would have done the same thing in your shoes.

Onysax,
It was a tough decision. I am having an absolute ball with this Bass Sax. You have to get one of these babies, fun just doesn't describe the sensation well enough. Bwwaaaaaatttttttt....

Bootman,

When are you going to put up some MP3s of this thing?

How does it look? Jeff Brody on this list plays one and has sent me some pictures...it's right up your alley: Fresh Anderson Silverplate with gold wash in the bell. Then he had Sherry engrave the bejeezus out of it. Probably the sweetest looking horn I've ever seen.

man of steel, Check out my website, www.bootmanmusic.com/Quartets.htm and click on Teddy Bears Picnic. The sound is incredible. I have also just acquired a Conn Bari to replace the one I sold/swapped. It was only gone a week and I was pining for this horn. Ridiculous really but then again it did have the sound.

Bootman, how does this Chu stack up against the one you just traded away?

I'd love to get a bass sax, but the prices are just a bit too prohibitive at this time. I'm still hoping for that $100 bass sax at a garage sale!

Onysax,
I will let you know when the horn arrives here. It is in transit as I type this. I can hardly wait for this horn, it had only been a week and I was already pining for the Chu. Thankfully, the 246K has been located for the right price.

Hey Mr. Bootman, don't forget your pal here
up over that forced you to spend on that bari coming to you!!! Once you see how wonderful this series plays you can let these readers know about my upcoming need to sell my baby with those new Hollywood resopads (just in case any walls have to be knocked down during a gig)..
As Steve Goodson says in his web site about this series from the very early 50's
"Now we are talking about really great saxophones here!"

Brian,
I thank you publicly for pointing this horn out to me, a great service you did for me indeed. I didn't say so before in case you were in trouble with SWMBO. I am now in trouble with SWMBO or the Boss but if I sell something, all should be fine again.

The 246K is placed around 1931 by the serial number charts, a little later than the Mulligan favoured numbers but this should be fine. The horn is in transit at the moment and I should have sometime next week or the following depending upon Australian Customs and wether they think I am importing a Bazooka or some kind of weird Missile launcher.

Once again thanks Brian, you are a truly great Bloke.
