It's Boddingtons here (Scrumpy is #2).

Other Bari players have agreed.

I'm partial to Dinkelacker CD Pils if in Germany though (Eichbaum Urtyp. is #2).

What should a 'real' bari drink?

Bellhaven Scottish Ale or Negro Modelo. But then I play a B991.

In Chicago, it's Goose Island Honker's Ale. Has quite an explosive impact both coming and going.

If the Bari player is doubling as his/her own roadie, then that calls for John Courage.

I forgot, when in the USA Leinies is it (Leinenkugel) - prefer the Honey Weiss.

Yep, George Killian's Irish Red. For Martin players only. Too wild for the Selmer lads.

When I have "The SML" Bari out I don't like to drink beer - prefering something that is less sweet/sugary and has a kick to match the Bari.

So then it is Rye Manhattans on the Rocks - doubles please!

(This makes for three shots of Rye Mash Whiskey and one shot of Sweet Vermouth Wine, with a healthy dash on Angostura Bitters, over ice - garnish with pickled mushrooms or onions).

Five or Six of these and you're ready to play!

Is it true that Alto/Soprano Players drink exclusively 'Babychams'??

For this bari player, there is a big difference between what I will drink and what I will buy.

Prefer, almost any handcrafted amber beer/ale. Too many to list.

I like Guinness Stout. It's a Bari Sax sort of brew......Thick and rich........

Boddington's will do me pretty well; I happened to have a pint the other night in Berkeley. A typical British bitter ale. Of course, living on the west coast, and spending time in both the Seattle and San Francisco areas, there is, as MojoBari suggests, an overabundance of excellent handcrafted beers and ales available from any of hundreds of local brewpubs.

In other words, I am probably devoting more time to good beer here than good bari-blowing.

Paulaner Pilsner or Erdinger Weissbier. I only play German school beeritone. (I'd change my mind if I was in Seattle or SF.)

Guinness Extra Stout if I'm just drinking beer. Pilsner Urquell if I want a shot to go along with it.

By the way, this is the best topic for a thread we've had since Discussion Place closed down.

Plus the cigarette butts were soggy and hard to light.

Bari-appropriateness aside, I like Newcastle Brown.

But the beer most appropo for a bari player to me is Guiness Stout...It's big, dark, full, and fat...er, makes you fat. (someone once told me that each 12 oz has something like 700 calories...can anyone confirm this???)

I have a 365 beers/year calendar. I saved January 4th as the best marketing name: "Magnolia Old Thunderpussy Barleywine". Brewed in San Fran. 10.2% alco. One day I hope to get to try it.

I've seen "Aass" ale. "Grab an Aass, you wont be sorry."

Magnolia Thunderpussy was the name of a specialty bakery in the Haight Ashbury back in the psychedelic days of the 60s. The bakery specialized in cakes which replicated genitals and other humorous shapes. Thus MT is an old pop-culture thang in SF. The barleywine in question may be very strong (in name and alcohol) but that doesn't mean that it is a good drink!
