Cecil payne uses an old yanagisawa low A bari,
a lawton 6* piece and maybe fibracell soft reed?
I am sure of everything except the piece opening.

A 20 year old Yani 880 to be exact. He used to play a Conn, which he says was the greatest Bari he ever played. When Downbeat asked what happened to that horn, he said he wouldn't go there. I assume that was one of the great "I shouldda never's"
He sounds great on the Yani, though.

Hasn't Cecil made some unusual modifications to his horn such as removing some keys and closing the tone-holes off with cork? I saw him in a club not long ago and talked with him a bit but I didn't get a chance to inspect his horn up close. But whatever he's done to it he sure plays the hell out of it.
