I guess I figured this post would be less in the way here. I'm seriously digging a Lawton I get to play on now and again when I double on a sax-mate's tenor from bari.
He plays a Yamaha Custom and my bari's an ancient Buescher - 1920's. I want the sound and the power - will it be compatible? I've heard these guys like big chambers and a lot of facing, and I had a bad experience with a very small Berg (.095) as far as tuning went. Granted, later on I ended up having it worked on and some of the keys re-regulated. I guess I'm just wondering compatability and hoping some of you guys are knowledgeable?

Don't know where you are, but if in Europe, give Dawkes Music www.dawkes.co.uk a call, they have a guy there called Anton Weinberg who makes mouthpieces, but they sell all brands as well; when I have asked for advice, he has quickly got me on the right track. Sorry I can't help with a direct answer, but this is worth a try.

Try a Quantum on this horn, Lawtons are very good too but a tweaked Quantum is the best Bari mpc I have yet discovered. It was so good I sold both my Lawtons.

Yeah, damn you for that. :P
hehe.
Seriously, I've got a JVW tweaked Custom that, I dunno, maybe it's just not big enough at .120, but it just doesn't bark, not the way my Berg did. I may just try a bigger Berg or try to swap my Custom for something else.

Yeah, I do recognize that I need to make some reed changes but I guess I got a little scared away by the fact that I bought too soft a fibracell and it ended up being more responsive on my link.

I still need to talk to the reference I got from SteveW but do either of you guys have any input on whether I would need to settle for a B rather than BB (or similarly, go for a less bright Berg) to retain compatability? I'm looking to try either of the two soon, at around a .130, in hopes of squeezing some funk out of myself.

The B will have a rounder sound where as the BB will have a little more Bark to the sound. It will still retain the big Bottom end.
