Anyone have any experience with the Winter shaped baritone sax cases (model #2197)? I know their alto and tenor shaped cases (including the Green LinE) are quality cases having used one for alto for many years. I'm looking for a lightweight case for my new Yamaha 62 bari.

I'm asking since the Walt Johnson is almost twice as expensive as the Winter in the Woodwind & Brasswind catalog. Any pockets or niches for mouthpieces, neck, and reeds?

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The winter are fine cases protection wise. The latches can be a problem (coming away from the case itself) due to the way they are attached to the case...but I have never heard of the latches popping.
The WJ is a death sentence for your bari...read my comments elsewhere on the bari thread....

Ihad a winter tenor case for several years...when you latch it, the teeth of the latch can overshoot the slot they are supposed to "bite" and they instead, bite into the any space between the latch base and the body of the case...then they start pulling away.
You'd think that the maker would do something about it...but then again WJ has done nothing about the bari case yet too...and it''s a LOT more expensive..
hmmm....

i fixed mine by drilling a hole thru the latch and case and installing a small nut and bolt thru both. works perfect and the latch covers the bolt so you dont see it

...I got a new Selmer Lo A bari a few weeks ago and they sent it to me in a genuine Selmer Black Flight Case. What a nice case except for lack of storage. I'm looking for a cover that will work on it to provide some storage. My Tenor has been in one of these flight cases for many yrs. and has proven to be bullet-proof..The Selmer case should work fine with any modern Lo A Bari.

Cash...is this case for your bari the Walt Johnson case with the Selmer name on it? If it is GET RID OF IT IMMEDIATELY!!!!!! You will rue the day you ever put your horn in it when you open it one day to find the crook bent up after taking a whack.
I am under the impression that the case you are describing is the WJ case.
If so, look at the amount of padding at the very top of the case where the crook fits in the case and put your finger there and push...you'll find that you touch the inside of the case shell with little pressure at all and that means when your horn case takes a whack on that end, then your horn is going to be trashed...no if's, and's or but's!
If you are ok with keeping it, you can order a Cavallero case cover from WW&BW that is specifically made for this case; but if it's the case I think it is- knowing how much you love your new horn- then I'd hate for you to experience what I and many acquaintances have....

HiYa Randall, I just looked carefully inside my flight case and it looks OK to me. It's got a reasonable amount of padding under the crook. I just folded a small towel there also to give a little extra support. I have a WJ Alto case for my MK VII so I have an idea what WJ's look like. I also have an older (at least 15 yrs.) Selmer flight case for my VI Tenor so I know what these cases look like as well. I haven't heard that WJ makes cases for Selmers, but at any rate it certainly doesn't look like a WJ. My Alto WJ case seems OK but it's a different animal from the Selmer cases that I have. The WJ Alto case has a different type looking crushed-velvet lining, a different pebbly-grain to the exterior shell and anvil case type locks on it. coincidently I got a Selmer cover for it that fits it reasonably well. Thanks for the tip on the Cavallero cover, I will have to find out the shape of it. My Bari flight case is the most compact fitted case for a Bari that I've ever seen. And it seems to me that the pics of the WJ Bari case I've seen are a larger more triangular shape the the Selmer case. If so the Cavallero wouldn't fit it all that great. I've got the guys at USA Horn and Saxfoon. both looking for the real deal cover, but so far no luck... BTW,did you have a Cav. cover with your WJ... ?

Yo Randall, just for kicks I found the Walt Johnson official site. Good pic of his Bari case.. NOT the same as Selmer Flight Case (Whew!!) The general overall shape is similar though. Looks like a Cavallero Cover will work! Have you seen a Cav. Cover? Any opinions? Thanks man, Cash

buy a leather camera case or fanny pak and attach it to the strap and there is your storage problem solved

Yes Cash I had the Cavallero cover on the WJ bari case I had. They are quite good and lots of storage...one problem though; the shoulder strap was placed kind of awkwardly , so it was not comfortable to carry when compared to the position of the strap on the WJ case itself.
Also, the WJ cases that are made for Selmer tenors and altos look quite a bit different than the normal WJ cases.....No kidding, I really fear for you on the bari case. Try to double check it. I'd like to see a JPG of your bari case too, if you could send one.
Ditto on Super20Dan's recommendation. I did this for years on my flight cases.

Hello fella's, good info. THANKS..Randall, I don't have any way to send a pic of my case. But, the WJ site has a very clear pic of their Bari case and it doesn't look like my Selmer case at at all, other than the general dimensions. So I think I'm OK In that dept. WW/BW has the CavallAro (spelled correctly) Bari case cover on sale so I may try one. Although my Selmer case has 2 handles (well placed BTW) and the WJ only shows one. Custom-made is also possible thru Cavallaro, but very expensive. Super Dan, I got a fanny pack last year at a Harley run (Street Vibrations in Reno). Now I know what to do with it ! Although I would still like a good case cover for cosmetic protection as well. Great input guys , thanks again to you both..Cash
