Anyone got any suggestions for a mouthpiece/reed combination to go with my Yanag 900 that would give maximum volume and cutting power. I'm not interested in subtlety here, I can do that already.

Maybe try a metal RIA with a .140" tip. And with some extra baffle (spoilers from Runyon Customs work well in RIAs) these pieces can really scream.

Lawton, Quantum (big tip opening) and even the Yani metals all play well. A Lamberson DD model is very good too.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Christmas is coming up and I needed something for my wish list.
Unfortunately I don't know of anyone in the UK who stocks Lambersons. I had a Lawton for a few years ago but thought it rather bland. I tried a Dukoff a couple of months ago but couldn't get on with the shape of the tip. So I think I'll try a Quantum.

Big Nick, what Lawton did you use on bari? I got one coming.I got one delrin Q for bari, good for R&B,especially with the spoiler but I prefer metal.

Oh dear, you're asking me to use my memory. I think it was a metal 7BB. The sound was very clear and I used it in a quartet, dance band and concert band so presumably I thought it wasn't very outrageous.
No one complained, anyway. Like most of these things it's all a matter of personal preference and ultimately the Lawton didn't do much for me. I think I replaced it with a Rousseau Jazz 7 which I felt had more character.

I received one Dukoff D7 for bari couple of days ago and I think its the best mpc for bari I´ve tried yet.Its bright but not too bright, easy to play, clear sound, great mpc.I´m also looking for a more rock-type sound with bari and this mpc works very well for that purpose.

Few corrections here: I did some comparison between Dukoff D7 and Runyon delrin Q#14 (.124) (ex-Bootman) as I got some new reeds (LaVoz med.hard).
Dukoff played OK but bit ankward and thin, worked better with LaVoz mediums. Then I put LaVoz med.hard on the Quantum and the thing started to ROCK!! Great, huge sound! Big bottom end and loud! And very easy to play.I tried the spoiler but it was better without.I´ve never really liked the Q on tenor but on bari its really works great, just needs a bit harder reed.
Big Nick, try one of these;I´m sure you´ll like them.

Sam,
Glad that mpc is kicking for you. It really came to life for me with MH reeds too. No spoiler. Loud and resonant with a huge bottom end and an incredible altissimo too.

Can't wait for the next Crowee* gig, the sound of a Conn bari at full throttle waaaay up high is sumfin else.
You had to be there.
Upmarket pub, Boot's band, nice girls, good visuals, good vibes, cold Aussie beer, no volume problems, and a crazy man playing bari.
* Crowee...short for Crows Nest.

Anyone know who in the US will do online ordering of Quantums and ship to the UK? They seem to be a lot cheaper over there.

Hey Bootman, I have a 901 yani and I have just put a Runyon Metal Quantum #9 with spoiler. I have been having a hard time getting it to play right with the spoiler in. I have sanded the edges slightly and placed it farther back in the mouthpiece and that did help. I guess I need to go more because the low notes are hard to play with the spoiler in. With it out they are fine but I like the added "edge" with it in for jazz band work. Got any suggestions? Thanks for your help

Consider also sanding the Spoiler thinner. Remove a 3rd of the thickness, lower the peak of the roof of the Spoiler. I call this my "Lite" Spoiler.

StevieW,
Mojo's suggestions about sanding the spoiler down should help. You may also try a slightly more open version of your Quantum mpc. I have always preferred the spoiler out on the Quantum Bari mpcs. Try these techniques and see if it helps with your problems.
