You mean the one with Pepper Adams and Nick Brignola? Beehive record label, if I'm not mistaken. I remember an interview with Pepper in which he said he didn't think that was his best work. It's certainly worth having, but I've got a feeling you'll have to search for it in places that carry used vinyl.

I have it and, as Merlin says, it is not the best work from either of them. Of course they play great, but it is indicative of Nick's recordings of the time: being lesser-known (then) he didn't always have the stellar rhythm sessions he had on his Reservoir sessions. I always thought that nick played great in spite of his rhythm sessions on those sessions, but the reservoir sessions are all so much more cohesive.

As for Pepper, he said in a "Coda" magazine interview that he was just a sideman and that Nick called all the tunes. I think it was a a case of two great players that didn't gel together. Also, Ted Curson sounds terrible on the album - thin sound, cacked notes. The alternate take of "Stablemates", included on "The Unreleased beehive Sessions" album, is superiour to what was released. On that one Nick plays Alto and the overall ensemble is better. (IMHO)

Well, it looks like I'm not going to find it. It hasn't been re-released on CD and it's not available at my local libraries (public and two universities).

It may not be their best work but from a budding baritone player that has been a bebop fan for a very long time it's definately a _must have_ recording.

I have "Cecil Payne plays Parker" but I need more. .. Does anyone have suggestions for baritone bebop?

I remember talking with Pepper about this session, he was not happy with the mic placement and mixing of the session, it sounded as if they were making Nick's sound fatter and larger than Peppers. I personally think it was great, hearing two wonderful baritonist on a blowin session.

Good luck locating a copy, I have seen copies on Ebay.

It is worth having and, of course, Pepper and Nick always sounded great. I would recommend trying ebay as well as some used record store sites. I would recommend "Burn Brigade" even more. It has brignola, Cuber, and Payne. While I'm not in love with Payne's sound, the three baritones sound great together. There is also an album by Rein DeGraf called "Baritone Explosion" on Timeless which features Nick and Ronnie Cuber. It's purely a blowing date, but a good one.
