I´d like to hear experiments/comments about Protec bari cases, especially contoured ones. Are these OK cases for bari? Thanks again!

I just got one for my bari and am quite happy with it. My first protec contoured case was for tenor, which I bought some years ago, and I think the quality control has improved a lot since then. Not that the tenor case was no good, just some sloppy seams in the fabric, velcro coming off, etc. This new bari case is noticeably better finished and very sturdy.
I wish Protec could be convinced to make a case for curved soprano!

I also have Protec tenor (square) and contoured bari. I like them very much. Not lightweights such as the molded plastic ones ($), but easy to use, and they have a music pouch leaving your other hand free to open doors. A plus... the fabic covered cases are kinder to your door jams than hard cases are.

The contoured bari seems to do a good job holding the body of the horn. I would suggest checking around the bell to see if you need to add extra padding (there was a lot of room with a Yamaha 52). Also, you may want to consider adding padding along the full length of the body. It is my opinion that most bari tubes get bent by inadaquate support in the case- every time the case is put down the body tube will flex in the areas where there is no support. Great everyday case, but don't give it to a roadie or a airline!

I used one of these for a few years on a Conn Bari. There was a distinct lack of support for the horn inside the case and it required extra padding to take up the slack around the instrument. Not the best option for a case as they are heavy and lacking in internal protective padding. I would never travel with the horn in one of these cases.

Bootman, what case do you recommend then? Mine is JK made Couf bari.I know Winter cases fit the Couf but I don´t see how Winter cases support the horn any better.

I don't really want to referee here, but I think that Bootman and Subtone are talking about two different Protek cases. I believe that Bootman's was the trapezoidal shaped case that fits both A and Bb horns, while Subtone is talking about the contoured case for the low A only.
I personally hate the trapezoidal case, but the low A contoured is an okay case. Of course, few if any of these cases should be thrown in the belly of a plane.

Is this a new case? I just went to Protec's website to see if they list a new bari case. What I saw there is what I'm familiar with: two cases - one they call 'standard' and one they call 'contoured.' The standard case is the one that I describe as trapezoidal because of it's unusual shape to allow the fitting of either a Bb or A bari. The contoured case that I know fits only a low A bari.
I've heard and read comments from others saying that they like Protec's Bb/A case. I don't and would agree with Bootman's concerns with its padding and structure. The contoured case for low A bari's is a better case, obviously, only if you have a low A bari.
Again, I apologize if Protec has a new case that I don't know about and isn't well described on their website.

Bones,
I am talking about the Contoured case. I owned one which I used with my Chu baritone. The case required extra padding to keep the horn fairly snug but even so there was far too much slop around the inside of the case.
Sam ,
the big difference is in the support for the body tube, the top curve etc. Also the Winter case is much lighter, less weighty than the protech. There are no zippers to stuff around with. I will send you pics of both cases. The difference is very dramatic, after the Winter case where the horn is held (4 or 5 points) snugly and it can't move inside the case and the protech where there is none and a drop inside thise case would equate to a very expensive trip to the repair shop, the choice really does become rather academic.

OK, I've seen Bootman's pictures. His Bb Chu looked pretty good in the contoured Protec. I tried my Bb Keilwerth in a contoured Protec and the curvature of the bell didn't work at all. I don't know if the case is different than mine, or if the bells were just that different. The rectangular Winter case is quite impressive. It looks like a very snug fit. I've never seen that model of Winter case.

I saw Bootmans pics too (thanks Bootman!).Protec contoured case fits BOTH low Bb and low A baris.Thats the info I got from Bill Lewington,Saxophone.co.uk and Saxofoonwinkel.Mine is H.Couf Suberba bari,a bit different from Conn.I´ll let you know how it fits when I get the case.Bootman is right, the support of the body tube is important.I expected Protec to have this support but I guess not.

I compared Bootman's pictures to my contoured low A Protec case. Without question, Protec changed their contoured case since I purchased mine. There is no way that any Bb bari could fit in my contoured case.

I got my contoured ProTec and fits my Couf bari quite well. There is very little movement when horn is in the case, hardly at all.Maybe needs some added padding on the lid (inside),near the bell area. Also, there should be support on the middle of the horn but there is none.OK case but not a heavy duty one.Better than the orig. case I had anyway.I wish Hiscox will introduce their bari case soon;if its as good as their tenor case,I´ll get one.

Sam,
Just add some expra padding inside th ecase as a stop gap measure. I would love a Hiscox Bari case too. It is long overdue.
