I know that some of you guys will say "neither, get a yani". . .etc.
I'm really starting to get into bari, and I'd like to try the horns listed above. I've heard great reviews about both saxes, and I'd like to hear some opinions.
Where would the best place to order from? WWBW? Overseas?

I think you should try both of these (and more besides) and see which you like best, but I can tell you my experience with Jupiter. I recently got a 593BL (lower end model compared with the 893). I have been very pleasantly surprised by how much I like it. So the Artist horn you're looking at will probably be a very nice horn. The only experience I've had with the Yamaha is playing briefly on a friend's horn. I thought it was nice, but no better than the Jupiter really.
I've also heard good things about the Cannonball line, though I've never tried one. Play all the horns you can before deciding!

I've written a fair number of responses regarding my positive experiences with the Jupiter Artist Bari in the Inexpensive Brands topic area. In short, it's been my exclusive performing and recording horn for the past 2.5 years now. Just did a live big band recording on it last week.

Merlin -- what kind of setup are you using on your Artist? I've been pretty happy so far with a hard rubber Berg on my Jupiter, but am open to other possibilities.

For most of my playing (big band, jazz, commercial) I use a Vandoren B75 bari m/p that I modified by removing a large portion of the baffle. Vandoren #3, Alexander Classique #3, or Legere #3 reeds. For playing classical, I'm using a Vandoren bass sax m/p - same reeds.

I've had a Yamaha -52 Bari available to me for some time and it certainly is also a solid choice.

If I was buying the horn without getting to play it first, I would go with the Yami. Their quality control will almost certainly assure you of getting a great playing horn. The non-Japanese asian brands may be a little more hit and miss.

I was listening to some repairman friends of mine the other day and they were saying they were very impressed by the Jupiter Artist horns. One of them said he was working on a Bari that's the backup horn of a pro player and he was really surprised by what a good horn it is. I have a Yani, but for $2500 if you can find a Jupiter in that price range - it's a heck of a deal.
