That's right. My 1927 Conn Chu Baritone Sax (M204,xxx) has returned home after its seven-month restoration at Vintage Sax, and I am thrilled at the results!

Gayle did a fantastic job with the body work on the horn. This horn had been around the block more than a few times and had some pretty nasty dents in the body tube and the loop, and the entire bell was peppered with "outsies". Now the horn is as smooth as a baby's butt. Appearance-wise, this horn is even more striking than my 201,xxx tenor that was restored last year that most of the Maryland crew has seen.

Best of all, the horn plays even better than it looks. Chubby was a strong player even in pre-restoration condition, easily chomping up every bari that crossed its path. Now the horn plays even better, the keywork is smoother, the tone is even stronger. Whatever few vices the horn had in its pre-restoration condition have disappeared.

For those who had both seen and tried out Chubby at our get-togethers, be prepared to be blown away both visually and musically. The horn is a monster!

...and barely an hour of playing time on the horn and it already picked up its first scratch. UGH!!!! I was placing the horn on its stand and did not realize one of the rubber bumpers was missing. I heard, and felt, that sick metal scratching metal (made even more pronounced by the sandblasted finish which is still rough) sound, and the first scratch appeared. Geez!

So has the USGS come around searching for the source of the seismic activity in your neighbourhood yet?

Not yet, but playing the horn did make my computer screen display start jumping from across the room.

It took a little bit of time to get used to playing bari again. I had a loaner YBS-52 while the Chu was gone (thank you Jough), but a back injury that I sustained in June (two fractured vertebrae), pretty much shut me out of bari playing until now. This is going to be fun.
